Distinguished and Famous people from Nerang

🌾 Arthur Earle

Arthur Earle bought a cattle property near Nerang in 1964 after years in Queensland’s pastoral industry. As the Gold Coast expanded, he acquired and developed neighbouring land, while a disused railway quarry became another successful enterprise. His interests eventually included the Allambe memorial park and funeral business. The local story reflects the rapid transition from rural holdings towards a growing urban region, with opportunities recognised in land and materials others had passed over. Earle’s substantial Nerang association began in working agriculture and broadened into development and community business life.

🪵 William Duncan

William Duncan was a Scottish-born timber getter associated with the early colonial cedar industry around the Nerang River. Work in that landscape depended on locating suitable trees, cutting and moving heavy timber, and finding routes towards transport and markets. His name is preserved by William Duncan State School, whose emblem combines the river, cedar trees and hinterland mountains. The association connects a local institution with an earlier working landscape, before the Gold Coast became identified primarily with beaches and urban development. The timber industry was one colonial chapter on country already known and used by Aboriginal communities.
